PULLMAN, Wash.Washington State University researchers have found an unlikely recipe for antibiotic resistant bacteria: Mix cow dung and soil, and add urine infused with metabolized antibiotic. The urine will kill off normal E. coli in the dung-soil mixture. But antibiotic-resistant E. coli will survive in the soil to recolonize in a cow's gut through pasture, forage or bedding.
"I was surprised at how well this works, but it was not a surprise that it could be happening," says Doug Call, a molecular epidemiologist in WSU's Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health. Call led the research with an immunology and infectious disease Ph.D. student, Murugan Subbiah, now a post-doctoral researcher at Texas A & M. Their study appears in a recent issue of the online journal PLOS ONE.
While antibiotics have dramatically reduced infections in the past 70 years, their widespread and often indiscriminate use has led to the natural selection of drug-resistant microbes. People infected with the organisms have a harder time getting well, with longer hospital stays and a greater likelihood of death.
Animals are a major source of resistant bugs, receiving the bulk of antibiotics sold in the U.S.
The scientists focused on the antibiotic ceftiofur, a cephalosporin believed to be helping drive the proliferation of resistance in bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli. Ceftiofur has little impact on gut bacteria, says Call.
"Given that about 70 percent of the drug is excreted in the urine, this was about the only pathway through which it could exert such a large effect on bacterial populations that can reside in both the gut and the environment," he says.
Until now, conventional thinking held that antibiotic resistance is developed inside the animal, Call says.
"If our work turns out to be broadly applicable, it means that selection for resistance to important drugs like ceftiofur occurs mostly outside of the animals," he says. "This in turn means that it may be possible to develop engineered solutions to interrupt this process. In doing so we would limit the likelihood that antibiotic resistant bacteria will get back to the animals and thereby have a new approach to preserve the utility of these important drugs."
One possible solution would be to find a way to isolate and dispose of residual antibiotic after it is excreted from an animal but before it interacts with soil bacteria.
The WSU experiments were performed in labs using materials from dairy calves. Researchers must now see if the same phenomenon takes place in actual food-animal production systems.

The?Senate failed again to advance legislation to protect the U.S. electrical grid and other critical industries from cyberattack, setting the stage for President Barack Obama to sign an executive order to improve the country's digital defenses.
A motion to limit debate and force a vote on the bill fell well short on Wednesday of the 60 votes needed to pass, with only 51 senators backing the measure. Democrats and Republicans disagreed over the role the Homeland Security Department and other federal agencies should play in protecting essential businesses from cyberattacks.
The Senate also failed in August to move the bill forward.
The Obama administration has said that if Congress does not pass cybersecurity legislation, the president will act to protect critical infrastructure companies from cyberthreats and electronic espionage.?

Dramatist Lucy Prebble and director Rupert Goold certainly can't be accused of dodging difficult subject matter. They scored a huge success with Enron, which drew high praise for the vivid physicality with which it conveyed the mind-bending ingenuities of corporate fraud.
Now the dream team is reunited on The Effect, Prebble's follow-up play. Searingly well-performed in Goold's co-production with Headlong and choreographed in a manner that is tinglingly alert to the fierce emotional geometries of the piece, this four-hander brings the author's agile wit, intellectual penetration and a fresh, deeply affecting empathy to bear on a fundamentally much more complex topic than finance: brain chemistry and what it can ? and cannot ? tell us about the causes of severe depression and the experience of being in love.
All straight lines and sleek minimalism, Miriam Buether's in-the-round set converts the Cottesloe into the residential research unit of a pharmaceutical company where psychology student Connie (excellent Billie Piper) and Jonjo O'Neill's Northern Irish, attractively subversive Tristan meet as fellow test-subjects (for cash) on the trial of a new super-antidepressant. They have been deliberately chosen as non-depressives and as the dopamine kicks in, they rebel against the monitored rigidity of the procedure with a flirtation that begins with banter over urine samples and escalates, via what can be described only as a mating tap-dance, to explosive, full-blown passion. But given the chemicals with which they have been pumped, can they trust their emotions? "I can tell the difference between who I am and a side effect," Tristan declares. But Connie, whose agitated mix of wired-up emotional transparency and wariness is most movingly communicated by Piper, is sceptical of the feelings that are coursing through her.
When he sees the central couple's pulsing brain scans, Tom Goodman-Hill's smug Dr Sealey is convinced that it indicates a successful antidepressant effect. For him, it's not a case of the brain mistaking what it is undergoing for love, but of love as the brain's creative rationalisation of the neural excitement. Anastasia Hille's troubled Dr James has a good reason for contradicting this, though: she knows that one of the patients is on a placebo. As Connie and Tris descend from erotic bliss to paranoid aggression, the doctors fracture into opposing extremes, with the unravelling Dr James charging her former partner of promoting the view that depression is purely a matter of chemical imbalance as a way of excusing his moral responsibility for her own breakdown.
This is a provocative and challenging play and, as someone who has long had cause to be grateful for breakthroughs in medication, it ends in edgy gesture of good sense that made me feel like cheering.

CANBERRA (Reuters) - The head of Australia's powerful Catholic Church acknowledged the "shame" of child sex abuse among the clergy and welcomed a sweeping inquiry on Tuesday, but also warned that the extent of the problem within his church had been exaggerated.
On Monday, Prime Minister Julia Gillard ordered a rare Royal Commission, the highest form of investigation in Australia, into how churches, government bodies and other organizations have dealt with possibly thousands of child sex abuse claims.
George Pell, Australia's only cardinal, said the Church would cooperate fully with the new inquiry, which can compel witnesses to give evidence and produce documents, and that he did not believe the Catholic church was the main perpetrator.
"We are not interested in denying the extent of misdoing in the Catholic church. We object to it being exaggerated, we object to it being described as 'the only cab on the rank'," said Pell, who is also Archbishop of Sydney.
"We acknowledge, with shame, the extent of the problem and I want to assure you that we have been serious in attempting to eradicate it and deal with it," he told reporters in Sydney.
Gillard called the inquiry in the face of mounting political pressure after explosive reports that orders within the Catholic Church had covered up abuse claims and hindered police inquires over several decades in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia's two most populous states.
Pell denied the Catholic Church actively covered up any child abuse and said comprehensive procedures introduced in 1992 ensured full cooperation with police and swift action against alleged abusers.
"We will cooperate fully. We have nothing we want to hide," Pell said.
Pell also said priests should refuse to hear confessions from suspected child abusers to ensure priests were not then bound by the confidentiality of the confessional.
"If the priest knows beforehand about such a situation, the priest should refuse to hear the confession, that would be my advice. I would never hear the confession of a priest who was suspected of such a thing," he said.
Late on Monday, a former police officer who investigated child abuse for decades, told Australian television the Royal Commission should examine aspects of the Catholic Church such as confession.
Former police officer Peter Fox sparked a nationwide outcry last week when he alleged the Catholic church had covered up abuse by priests in the Hunter Valley region north of Sydney. His allegations ultimately led to the new inquiry being called.
Gillard has yet to announce who will preside over it, or its terms of reference. She hopes to finalize the details by the end of this year but has refused to set a time limit on the Royal Commission, which could run for several years.
The Catholic Church is Australia's largest, with 5.4 million followers, representing about one in four Australians.

I?ve been day trading futures contracts for 6 a long time and I have visited or subscribed to above 20 chat rooms. I imagined it would use this discussion board to make a couple of observations about these rooms.
Most of the members of these rooms are new traders looking for the insight of a seasoned trader to help them build a buying and selling approach. There might be some knowledgeable traders there looking to add to what they presently know or just like the environment of becoming in a buying and selling neighborhood. As a expert day trader, you will find there are in fact extremely number of men and women you can chat to about day trading. It is nice to have team of folks that can relate to the ups and downs.
If you are new to day trading and seeking to develop a trading approach, a day trading chat area may possibly be proper for you. Most chat rooms are much less costly that investing thousands of pounds on a encounter to encounter mentoring applications. Some of the rooms provide a webinar truly feel that means they demonstrate you their charts and even investing system so you are going to be capable to see how a qualified trades in actual time. Other rooms could only call out entries without having declaring why they?re moving into the market place or displaying you any charts. In this scenario, you are reliant absolutely on the place (which keeps you subscribing, by the way) but a lot more importantly implies you are not in handle of your trades ? not good.
Most of the rooms I?ve visited supply a discounted and in a couple of instances free trial offer you, generally a month extended. Right after that you are charged a reoccurring monthly subscription payment ranging from $ a hundred ? $ 250 a thirty day period for the rooms I?ve seen. Is it well worth it? I say certainly as extended as you are learning a approach that is consistently creating you $ $ $ !
The sincere real truth is that of the rooms I?ve been in, quite handful of make money consistently.
Most rooms put up benefits, each and every month or month. And of course, all are worthwhile on paper which to any new trader would be a massive selling position. But you really should recognize that it is from the regulation for any chat space to submit actual funds, money results. What that indicates is that all outcomes are simulated or completed with fake money. Bottom line, they can publish whatever final results they want. For example, if a trade becomes even a bit rewarding they might show that trade as a winner in the final results regardless of the truth that the trade went on to turn out to be a complete loser.
In the finish, I would use a day trading rooms to get you started out or incorporate to what you might previously know but I wouldn?t set all my hopes on them. You have to produce your very own investing fashion and make it work for you. If you count totally on somebody else to make you money then what occurs when that individual is gone?

In "Silver Linings Playbook," Robert De Niro plays a rabid Philadelphia Eagles fan whose son, played by Bradley Cooper, has just been released from a mental facility and has moved back home.
This makes for some interesting family dynamics, he told TODAY's Matt Lauer Monday, and sometimes it's hard to know if you're supposed to laugh at the antics or take them very seriously. "That kind of material I always like, because that's what life is really about, that the irony and the humor is mixed with tragedy and drama," said the two-time Oscar winner.
De Niro and Cooper also worked together on "Limitless," and the actor says they've become friends. He's even offered him some advice, which comes as something of a relief. "I like to give advice to younger actors or anybody who wants it. ... I love to give advice to my children, but they're at an age where they don't usually want to listen," he said. "But ... Bradley really listens."
"Silver Linings Playbook" comes out Nov. 21.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Comedian Dave Attell told a packed house at the Comedy Cellar that New York after Superstorm Sandy had a familiar feel. "It was dark. Toilets were backing up. ... It was pretty much like it always was."
Another comic, Paul Mecurio, told the same crowd that he got so many calls from worried family members that he started making things up about how bad it was.
"I'm drinking my own urine to survive," he joked.
New York's comedy clubs, some of which had to shut down or go on generator power in the aftermath of the storm, dealt with a bad situation like they always have ? by turning Sandy into a running punchline.
"If they're going to do jokes on Sept. 12 about Sept. 11, then this thing isn't going to slow us down," said Vic Henley, the emcee of a show Oct. 28 at Gotham Comedy Club.
Sean Flynn, Gotham's operating manager, said comics were including the storm in their acts but had to be careful nonetheless not to make people feel worse than they already did.
"There's the old adage that tragedy plus time equals comedy. The variable is the time," he said. Still, he added: "You can't ignore the subject. That's what comedy's all about."
The Comedy Cellar, a regular stop for decades for the country's most notable comedians, was closed from Oct. 28 through Nov. 1, but reopened on Nov. 2 after a generator was brought in at a cost of several thousand dollars. Power didn't return until the next day, and the crowds came with it.
Everyone has a bad case of cabin fever," said Valerie Scott, the club's manager.
Mecurio said he thought the joke was on him when he got a call from the Comedy Cellar saying the club was going ahead with its show even though there was no light in the West Village. He headed downtown from the Upper East Side, hitting dark streets after midtown.
"It's pitch dark," he said. "And there's a room packed with people laughing. It was so surreal. ... I'm calling it the generator show. It was a really cool thing."
"You could feel there was something special about the show," he said. "The audiences were tempered in their mood. You could tell something was up, something was in the air. I knew it was cathartic for people."
He said a woman approached him after the show to thank him, saying: "You kind of brightened my day."
Sometimes, comics used the storm to get a laugh at the expense of the crowd, like when Mark Normand looked down from the Comedy Cellar stage at a man with a thin beard.
"I like the beard," he told him. "Is that because of Sandy? You couldn't get your razor working?"
And Attell used Sandy to mock a heckler, telling him: "You must have been a load of laughs without power."
At another point, Attell looked for positives in the storm.
"There's nothing better than Doomsday sex," he said.
Mecurio said he has made a point of including the storm and the havoc it caused whenever he takes the stage.
"I feel like as a comedian in the spirit of social satire, it's what we're supposed to do," he said. "It's the elephant in the room. How do you not do it?"

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say the government is reconsidering plans to buy more than $4 billion in arms from Russia.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki last month traveled to Moscow and outlined plans to buy the weapons, including helicopter gunships and air defense missiles.
Some Iraqi media reports, such as one that aired this week on the private al-Sharqiya TV channel, have suggested impropriety such as kickbacks by some of those involved in brokering the deal. They cite mostly unnamed sources and provide few specifics.
The prime minister's spokesman, Ali al-Moussawi, said Saturday the proposed deal is now under review.
Iraq's acting defense minister, Saadoun al-Dulaimi, insisted no money has changed hands so far and says the existing proposal "has become meaningless." He says the government plans to renegotiate the deal, seeking better terms.

First President Barack Obama violated federal law by instructing the feds to not enforce federal immigration laws.? Then Obama violates the Constitution with bypassing Congress to create law with the DREAM Act.
His goal was achieved as he overwhelmingly won the Hispanic vote, which we all knew was his purpose all along.? Now the Hispanics are following the only logical course there is to follow and that is to demand that Obama extend amnesty to the more than 11 million illegal aliens here in the U.S.
A Hispanic advocacy group by the name of United We Dream, believes that Obama and Congress owe them amnesty and citizenship.? Cristina Jimenez, an illegal from Ecuador and director of the group stated:
?[President Barack Obama and Congress] need to come together to deliver change on immigration policy, and by that we mean ? a roadmap to citizenship for our parents and communities.?
Lorella Praili, policy director for the group added:
?Deporting members of our community is irresponsible and unacceptable.?
EXCUSE ME?? They violate federal immigration laws and then tell us that if we try to enforce those laws that it is irresponsible and unacceptable?
My father-in-law came here as a legal immigrant and before he died, we had several discussions about illegals and their status and he told me it was an affront to him and all other legal immigrants who abided by federal law.? He told me that if they want to stay in the United States that they should follow the same legal path that he and the others took.
I also have a number of friends that are legal immigrants.? One family came here from South Africa to escape the racial issues and violent crimes.? They were devastated when they found out that their immigration requests were granted but that their teenage daughter?s was not.? One of the issues in South Africa they were trying to escape was a high rate of blacks raping whites.? They had no alternative but to leave their daughter with relatives while they came to America.? It took an additional two years before their daughter was finally granted permission to join them.
When I asked them how they felt about the DREAM Act and what Obama was doing, they said that they were offended and outraged.? It took them years and thousands of dollars for their entire family to come to this country legally. ?They believe that every person that comes to this country illegally should be arrested, charged with a federal felony for violating immigration law and then deported back to their home countries.? These are their words, not mine, but I whole-heartedly agree.
Now, House Speaker Rep. John Boehner has said that he is open to revamping immigration laws this next year. ?In a statement to the media, Boehner said:
?It is important for us to secure our borders and to enforce our laws. ? [And] I?m confident that the president, myself, others, can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.?
What makes Boehner believe that Obama will do anything to secure our borders?? Why have states like Arizona passed immigration laws to protect themselves?? It?s because Obama won?t.? Just a thought, but Obama?s administration has approved of a number of governmental appointees in the new Libya, one of which is an Al Qaeda operative who was placed in charge of Libya?s borders.
But other House Republicans are not ready to make such promises.? ?Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) issued the following statement in response to Boehner?s proclamation:
?I?m concerned that Speaker Boehner is getting ahead of House Republicans when he commits to getting a ?comprehensive approach? to immigration taken care of ?once and for all.??
?There?s been zero discussion of this issue within the conference, and I?m urging the Speaker to talk with House Republicans before making pledges on the national news. The first thing we need is for President Obama to finally enforce current immigration law and strengthen our borders. To take up any other agenda is bad policy for the American people and bad politics for Republicans. The Speaker needs to pull back on this issue and stop negotiating in public.?
Thursday night after Boehner made his promise to compromise, one of the local news stations from his home town of Cincinnati conducted a poll asking if Boehner should remain as the Speaker of the House.? The last I saw, the vote was 44% yes and 56% said no, Boehner should be replaced as Speaker, and this was from his own support base.
So here is my opinion, like it or not!
First of all, the House Republicans need to replace Boehner with someone like Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House.? I know Ryan is not about to start caving in to Obama?s demands.
Secondly, every person that is in the U.S. illegally, needs to be deported back to their home country and we should bill their home countries for the cost of deportation.? A record should be kept of all illegals and if any of them return illegally, then they should be arrested, charged with a felony and jailed.? America has to take strong drastic measure to secure our borders and send a message to the rest of the world that they will be severely punished for crossing our borders illegally.
Third, I would bring our troops home from Afghanistan and other Arab nations that hate our guts and place them along the US borders ? south and north.? Instead of our men and women defending the borders of other nations, have them defend our own borders for a change.
Some have told me that my views are harsh.? My reply is that I am only trying to uphold the laws of our nation and secure our borders.? I?m also tired of seeing the negative impact that illegals have had on our nation and our communities.? I?ve seen numerous small towns lose the only hospital or urgent care facility for miles around because they can no longer afford to provide all of the free medical to illegals that the federal government forces them to do.? I?ve seen entire neighborhoods overrun with crime and vandalism once illegals start to move in.? I lived in one of those neighborhoods.? I?ve also seen how unemployment actually drops once tough immigration laws have been passed like in Alabama.
The other thing that irks the heck out of me is when people from other countries flee their country because they don?t like the conditions there.? So they come and start turning America into the country they fled from and demand the right to do so.? I say if they don?t like America the way it is, then they shouldn?t have come here in the first place.
So now you know where I stand on immigration.? Zero tolerance ? enforce our laws ? protect our borders ? prosecute violators.

Do you have a similar story? I'm not sure I'm asking for solutions or advice here. But how about trying telling your story and how you handled it, that would probably give some insights.
Here's a short version of my story: I know that my partner really lied to my face. Well, I confronted before, more than once, each time a different result happened; there was time we fought like hell, there was time there was just the 'brushing-it-off' move, there was time there was lots of blaming and pointing finger, there was time there was counter-attack (tricky move and vicious one), there was time there was regrets and apologies.
But bottom line is, there was deceit and deception.
And I can't get out of this relationship. There were so many breakups. But we were weak, and we got back together after all the breakups. Maybe just so that there will be another breakup
Where do I find the strength to handle this?
What is your story?

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? A Vatican court on Saturday convicted a Holy See computer technician of helping the former papal butler in the embarrassing leak of confidential papal documents and gave him a two-month suspended sentence in the last trial in the scandal.
Claudio Sciarpelletti, a 48-year-old Italian who is a computer program analyst in the Vatican's Secretariat of State, testified that he had played no role in helping to leak the documents, which later formed the core of an Italian journalist's book alleging corruption in high ranks of the Vatican bureaucracy.
Last month, Paolo Gabriele, who served Pope Benedict XVI his meals and helped him dress for ceremonies, was convicted in a separate trial for the theft of the documents from the papal apartment and is serving an 18-month prison sentence in Vatican City.
Gabriele and Sciarpelletti are the only Vatican employees to be formally investigated in the case, which distressed the pope, embarrassed the Vatican hierarchy and left many wondering about the competence of the Holy See's security apparatus.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi told reporters after the verdict that the probe into the leak "isn't closed," but gave no indication of whether any other suspects existed. Lombardi said it was unclear if Sciarpelletti will keep his Vatican job. The defendant was ordered to pay court costs of a few thousand dollars, Lombardi said.
Sciarpelletti was convicted of aiding and abetting Gabriele by giving conflicting statements to Vatican investigators about an envelope found in his desk, addressed to Gabriele.
Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre cited Sciarpelletti's long years of service at the Vatican while suspending the sentence and ordering the criminal conviction not to appear on his record. The judge, a layman, said the court concluded that Sciarpelletti had helped Gabriele "elude the investigations of the authorities" at the Vatican.
At the start of Saturday's proceeding, the Vatican prosecutor sought conviction and a four-month sentence, which the court agreed with. But in announcing the sentence it immediately shaved two months off it to reflect Sciarpelletti's Vatican employment "service and lack of criminal record."
The verdict, following just over an hour of deliberation, was rendered "in the name of Pope Benedict XVI," Dalla Torre said.
Sciarpelletti looked crestfallen when he heard the verdict, then embraced his wife in the courtroom, according to a pool of reporters chosen by fellow journalists. Gabriele lives in Vatican City, but Sciarpelletti and his family live in Rome.
Both sides in the Sciarpelletti case have three days to appeal. Defense lawyer Gianluca Benedetti indicated that he would appeal.
Vatican investigators found the sealed envelope addressed to "P.Gabriele" and containing documents in Sciarpelletti's office desk. The prosecutor himself confirmed Benedetti's assertion that the envelope held documents "irrelevant, of zero value."
Gabriele, in court this time as a witness, described himself as a friend of the computer technician. During his own trial, the butler said he was concerned that Benedict wasn't being informed of the "evil and corruption" in the Vatican.
Gabriele testified he would give Sciarpelletti "many things" he had read on the Internet, along with copies of the pope's speeches and church teachings, but contended he never gave him official documents.
Sciarpelletti testified he never opened the envelope given to him 2 ? years ago and insisted his statements to investigators were confused because of the "great panic" and "moral shock" he felt after being arrested and held in a Vatican cell for a day in May. He also said that it is difficult to remember what he did nearly three years earlier, including who gave him the documents.
At one point, early in the probe, the computer expert told Vatican investigators the envelope was given him by his boss, Monsignor Carlo Maria Polvani, who is a nephew of the current Vatican ambassador to Washington. The diplomat, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, was the No. 2 administrator at the Holy See until being posted in Washington earlier this year.
In one of the letters leaked in the probe, Vigano pleaded with Benedict not to be transferred after exposing alleged corruption in the awarding of Vatican contracts that cost the Holy See millions of euros (dollars).
Polvani told the court he "never transferred any document protected by official secret" to Gabriele. "I swear on (my) baptism and priesthood that I never" did such a thing, the monsignor testified.
At one point Saturday, the usual formal atmosphere of the Vatican courtroom was interrupted by a bit of humor. When a court employee who was writing summaries of the testimony on a laptop complained of computer problems, Sciarpelletti offered his services, asking the judge: "Do you need a technician?"
The courtroom rippled with chuckles, but his help wasn't needed. It turned out there was a problem with a plug, which was quickly resolved.

SEATTLE ???It's not every day you get to stand inside the payload bay of a space shuttle, but that's the experience now awaiting visitors at The Museum of Flight in Seattle.
Beginning Saturday (Nov. 10), guests to the museum's Charles Simonyi Space Gallery will come nose-to-nose with the Full Fuselage Trainer (FFT), a full-size shuttle mockup that was used for three decades by the more than 350 astronauts who flew on the now-retired orbiters.
"We do not miss an opportunity to tell people that this is the one thing every single space shuttle crew member had in common," Dan Hagedorn, senior curator at the Museum of Flight, told collectSPACE.com during a tour of the Full Fuselage Trainer.
Construction of the FFT, NASA's only full-length shuttle trainer, began in 1974 at Johnson Space Center in Houston. During its 35 years in service, it was used for a multitude of purposes, ranging from egress training to familiarizing astronauts with the lighting conditions in the 60-foot-long (18 meters) cargo bay. [Gallery: NASA's Space Shuttle Program in Pictures]
Now, with the shuttle program over and the space-flown orbiters delivered to museums, the FFT is about to start serving its new role: teaching the public about how NASA readied its crews for launch and how that experience will lead in the future to missions out into the solar system.
"It's sort of a clunky analogy, but the whole 'one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind' ? the astronauts individually prepared to go to space here [in the FFT], the shuttle has helped prepare mankind with the knowledge of what might take for longer steps into the solar system," exhibit developer Geoff Nunn said.
Static shuttle
Made almost entirely out of plywood, the Full Fuselage Trainer wasn't designed to travel (though its nose section did once crash back to Earth when, decades ago, cranes being used in Houston to change its orientation failed and the mockup fell). For its move to Seattle, the trainer was segmented, shrink-wrapped and then shipped on NASA's bulbous Super Guppy cargo aircraft.
"I guess you could say it did fly once, on board the Super Guppy," Hagedorn said.
The FFT survived the trip with minimal damage, needing only a few paint touchups. But to make it more accessible for visitors, museum curators chose to replace its original aft section with a new build, gaining a theater and larger entry way to the payload bay in the process.
Following the opening ceremony on Saturday, guests will be able to ascend the trainer's new steps and tour through the open payload bay.
"We have general access into the payload bay, which is included with an admissions ticket," said Nunn. "You can wander into the payload bay and look around."
Looking up, visitors will see an engineering mockup of an Inertial Upper Stage (IUS), a rocket booster like the one used to thrust NASA's Galileo probe toward Jupiter after its launch on the space shuttle Atlantis in 1995.
Off the right wing ? if the trainer had wings, which it doesn't ? is suspended a half-scale but highly detailed model of the Hubble Space Telescope (complete with a spacewalking astronaut, also half-size). [The Most Amazing Hubble Discoveries]
At the front of the payload bay, guests can peer through the external airlock into the crew compartment's mid-deck, its storage lockers clearly in sight. An even better view of the interior awaits those who can venture inside ? either in person or virtually.
"We'll have limited crew compartment tours offered by tour guide, which are going to be run through our educational department," Nunn said. "But for visitors who aren't able to get into the actual crew compartment, we have a set of wonderful VR tours."
Through the hatch
Climbing into a space shuttle, even a mockup trainer, is not easy ? especially if you have never done it before. It's much like trying to push a square (or at least long and lanky) peg through a round hole.
And that's just the first of the challenges of trying to tour museum guests ? of multiple sizes ? through the crew cabin of the Full Fuselage Trainer.
"We're going with NASA's height limit, so 6 foot, 4," Nunn said. "Children have to be ten years or older and always accompanied by an adult. There is going to be a dress code and obviously physical mobility requirements."
Once through the hatch, the space available is limited. Divided between upper and lower, or flight and mid-decks, the pressurized crew compartment was designed to take full advantage of the microgravity environment. Crammed into an area no bigger than the interior of a minivan are a wall of storage lockers, a food galley, bathroom, a cockpit, control panels and a sleeping area.
"The most recurring comment we get is, 'I didn't realize it was so small in there' when they go into the crew cabin," Hagedorn said. "That is almost always the first comment."
In Earth orbit, moving between the shuttle's floors required only pushing off of a wall and floating through one of two openings on either side of the cabin. On the ground, that almost effortless action requires a steep, vertical ladder (or in NASA-speak, the "inter-deck access aid").
And what goes up must come down.
That means that guests won't just need to be "this tall" to ride this ride; they also must be able to maneuver inside without hindrance. In trial runs with off-the-street visitors chosen by a lottery, adults and kids alike either recognized their own limits while climbing up or had regrets once they were already standing on the flight deck and were faced with descending a ladder they couldn't see.
"The first thing we learned is that we have to make sure people can negotiate the interior. If they have any kind of infirmities or disabilities of any kind, it's very problematic," said Hagedorn. [Where to See America's Greatest Spaceships (Infographic)]
Combining education with preservation
Visitors' hesitations aren't the only concern, though. There is also the problem of those who feel too comfortable and view every switch, button and knob ? of which there are many on both decks ? as an invitation to flick, push and twist.
"We re-learned that people can't keep their hands off the thing," Hagedorn said. "It's pretty busy in there."
Plexiglas covers have been added to ward off wandering hands, but responsibility will fall to the tour guides, who will need to remind guests that the FFT is not just a hands-on exhibit but an artifact as well.
"We'll be walking that fine line between the museum's dual missions of preservation and education," Nunn said.
That dichotomy is illustrated by the one required change the museum had to make to the trainer: adding a sprinkler head to both decks in case of a fire.
"The only thing we had to modify ? and even then we used existing holes ? the fire marshal did require us to put in a sprinkler head into the crew compartment," Hagedorn said. "We did that, but it's unobtrusive and the only concession we made to the absolute accuracy of the artifact."
The museum hasn't yet worked out the final details of how access to the crew cabin will be offered, though it almost certainly will be through a premium tour of some sort. The museum's education department is looking at including the experience as part of a larger program they will offer about the shuttle program and training for space exploration.
